The local scene -- Elections Tomorrow

Tomorrow is Election Day and we have a quiet but important race going on in New Brighton. Gina Bauman lays out her case at Enlighten New Brighton. Some key points:
The dynamic of the council has changed in the last two years, and it is no longer a priority to keep spending increases under control.

In 2016 the tax levy will be over 9%; with 3.86% in a property tax levy, and an additional $400,000 as a City Franchise Fee.

A total of $1,000,000/year in the City Franchise Fee is collected in your Xcel Energy bill, is not tax deductible, and will continue well into the future.
The practice of third-party taxation is a popular one for politicians who would like to have more money and less accountability. It's doubly sneaky because it requires a public utility, Xcel Energy, to collect the money. Since public utilities are viewed with suspicion most of the time, people wrongly assume that the added cost of their utility bill comes from rate increases or something similar. Xcel simply passes the cost along. The second point Gina makes is especially important -- if you itemize on your federal tax form, you can deduct your local taxes, but this fee is not tax deductible.

The incumbent mayor, Dave Jacobsen, is a good man. The last two cycles, he's been the obvious choice. This time around, it makes sense to elect Gina Bauman, who will set a different agenda and continue to watch out for your wallets. I recommend the following slate for tomorrow:

Mayor:  Gina Bauman
City Council (2 at-large seats):  Rick Moses and Susan Erickson

If you vote for anyone else, you are voting for tax increases and less accountability going forward. Just so you know.
